The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996

The Act came into force on 1st April 2005, after this date if you fail to clear up after your dog in one of the designated areas you will have committed an offence under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996.If a Harborough District Council Officer witnesses you failing to clean up after your dog, you will be offered the opportunity to clear it up. Failing this, a spot fine (fixed penalty notice) will be issued, allowing you the opportunity to pay a fine of £50 rather than be prosecuted. If you fail to pay the fine within 14 days, legal proceedings will be instigated for breach of the Act. A Magistrate's Court may impose a fine of up to £1,000.

How to report dog fouling

If you witness someone allowing their dog to foul, call Harborough District Council on 01858 828282 or email enforcement@harborough.gov.uk identifying the culprit if possible.

The Parish Council provides three dog bins which are emptied weekly by its contractor. It also provides nine litter bins which will accommodate properly bagged dog waste.
